Four More Bullsh*t Marijuana Myths Busted Using the Fed’s Own Numbers

marijuana, facts, NORML, prohibition, states, report,

My apologies for getting this little nugget out to you guys late but you know how it is when you’re trying to pay attention and…well, you know how it is. Nevertheless, guess what I’ve got!?!

The Federal government’s annual report highlighting substance abuse. Now that may not sound interesting when I put it like that but if you look through the 300+ pages like Paul Armentano of NORML did right here. You’ll find even more myth busting information by comparing the data but in the meantime, here’s the breakdown.

Four More Bullsh*t  Mary Jane Myths BUSTED!!!

  • Myth: Marijuana use is prevalent in low income and urban areas thereby justifying the “War on Drug” and aggressive treatment and surveillance of poorer (read: Black and Latino) neighborhoods.

…..combating numerous drug warrior myths and stereotypes (such as the notion that high rates of illicit drug use — yes, the New England states lead in this broader category too — are typically relegated to poorer, urban, more racially diverse areas).

  • Myth: Marijuana use is neither determined nor undermined by state drug laws. People use marijuana if and when they choose to and not because states make marijuana possession laws harder.

…..it should be noted that despite the prevalence of medical marijuana states in these rankings, the authors of the report acknowledge that there is no evidence that the implementation of medi-pot laws is increasing the use of cannabis or other illicit drugs.

  • Myth: Establishing medical marijuana laws do not directly affect an increase in casual marijuana use.

They also call into question the notion that marijuana use among the general population is in any way influenced by the legal status of marijuana.

  • Myth: The Northeast loves them some Mary Jane. Nearly every state in the region made it’s way into the top spots for marijuana use.

The totals in the category ‘marijuana use in the past year among persons age 18 to 25‘ is even more New England-centric, with every northeast state (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont) all included in the top percentile (along with Alaska, Colorado, New York, and Oregon). In the category, ‘marijuana use in the past month among persons age 26 or older‘ Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont top the list (along with Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, and Oregon).

So, according this report by the United States government marijuana use is not the big bad monster that they make it out to be. With social concerns and morals aside, I wonder if a level-headed person would read this and ask themselves what the implication of this data means.

At the very least, our government has inflated the seriousness of marijuana’s affects on society. The decision to do so may have caused a  focus of limited state resources on treating a problem that may not have been a priority compared to other social issues.

At the very worst, this data shows a how an entire class of people (poor/brown) have been manufactured into a criminal class justifying the pursuit, expense and time required by the state to prosecute them when their marijuana use maybe less prevalent than in other (upper-class/white) areas. So if the real intent of the state is to pursue those that use illicit drugs the their polices effort to lock up offenders would correlate with drug use. This one theory begs the question of the states willingness to exploit their own criminal justice system to violate the rights of citizens to fund private industries that benefit from such discretion, specifically, the courts, the prisons and the legal industry.

Don’t be intimidated by false marijuana myths, educate yourself and stop the stupid with real data made by the same people that we’re fighting. Shout out to Norml for doing the hard part, now all you have to do is repeat it. Almost like cheating on a test but not. Until next time, people

Washington State Man To Choose Jail Over Paying Fine To Protest Marijuana Laws

Dana Walker(ed. note: I came across this online and asked him to share his story with us)

I am Dana, I am going to refuse to pay a fine for an old pot charge Friday, July 29th.

The public is invited.  Here is the Facebook ‘event’ page with the details:  https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=225517427489148

Here is a draft of the statement I plan to make:

I would like to point out that I do not drink alcohol or imbibe any dangerous drugs, I do not pillage or plunder, I believe that living your life honourably is one of the most important things a person can do and I practice what I preach.  I am an active and contributing member of my community and I have earned the respect and admiration of large numbers of the people in my community — and I hate to admit it as it goes against my ‘outlaw’ image, but I even obey the traffic laws.  In spite of all this I now have 4 felony convictions and 3 misdemeanor convictions, all for marijuana; I have spent over 6 years of my life incarcerated in a federal prison and four years on federal probation over marijuana, and Thurston County now wants me to pay a fine of $2,010 for marijuana plus $1,754 in interest on that fine that was accrued as I sat in a federal prison all those years.  Since I have been smoking marijuana on a regular basis for over 40 years now and no suffered no any ill-effects of any kind whatsoever that I am aware of, since I consider this state’s marijuana laws to be an unacceptable, unconstitutional, and outrageous infringement upon my personal liberty, since I love smoking marijuana and intend to continue smoking marijuana at any time that I darned well please, and since making someone like me into a criminal over marijuana is insane and stupid; then I am today placing the State of Washington on notice that from this point forward I will not only never again pay the state to prosecute me for marijuana but that I intend to make it as expensive to prosecute me for marijuana as I possibly can — and since I have been in the system for a long time I know how to do that.

I would also like to point out to that the feds had me under their thumb for over 10 years and they did not break me — and as of a few days ago I am no longer under that thumb.  And so today I am celebrating and reclaiming my freedom by informing the state that since I will no longer pay your fines and since I no longer fear your jails then – as far as marijuana goes – you no longer have any power over me and that in fact the stick is now in my hand.

As to the matter now before us I have no intention of making any more payments and I am requesting as long a jail sentence as the law allows for my refusal.

How To Spot The Differences Between Indica & Sativa

Even though marijuana (read: cannabis sativa or cannabis indica) is, according the US Justice Department, “one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man”, it still remains illegal. That’s why there’s precious little facts scientists know about the plant and the substances the plant produces. What we do know however, is that Cannabis is an extremely complex plant that’s divided up into three species, two of which are psychoactive and one (cannabis ruderalis), which isn’t.

Sativa v indica

Now Let’s start with Cannabis indica

To be clear, both Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa are annual plants in the Cannabaceae family. Cannabis indica is a putative species of the genus Cannabis. The strain probably originated from the Hindu Kush mountain range in central Afghanistan, which is known for extraordinarily frigid winters and searing hot summers. This gives the plant a short, dense look, oftentimes with broad, forest green colored fan leaves. The leaves darker color is due to their higher amounts of chlorophyll. The flowers (or ‘buds’) are generally heavy and fragrant and they tend to grow in pod clusters. Indicas are the faster growing varietal, typically with flowering times between 6 to 9 weeks. Even though the indica plants are smaller, their denser nugs usually yield higher amounts than sativas, plus they lend themselves to indoor growing better since the plants don’t get as tall as the sativas.

Effects of a good Cannabis indica

Indica is typically the variety most associated with being ‘stoned’, eg sitting on the couch, deep feeling of relaxation behind your eyes, loosening of your limbs and muscles. Your physicals senses are typically heightened such that listening to music, eating food or touching different textures feels incredibly rewarding. Indicas are great for relaxation due to their higher CBD and CBN levels than sativas (although some indicas also contain large amounts of THC as well). Some of the most potent medical marijuana for body pain, anxiety and appetite loss come from Cannabis indica, including Master Kush, G-13, Bubba Kush and others.

Cannabis sativa, I knew her well

If Cannabis indica is Ernie, than Cannabis sativa is Bert. Cannabis sativa tends to grow tall and thin, with smaller leaves that are brighter in color. In fact, a Cannabis sativa plant can grow up to 25 feet or higher in a single year! Most sativas grow in the 8ft -12ft range and originate from Mexico, Thailand and Colombia. Since they grow taller and use less chlorophyll, flowering can take between 10 to 16 weeks. The yield on a Cannabis sativa plant is typically lower than the indica, but on the flip side the buds are usually more potent and THC more concentrated. The fruity, sweet marijuana strains are almost always sativas.

Effects of a good Cannabis sativa

Cannabis sativas have higher THC content than most indicas and producing more of a ‘head high’. Typically, the effects of a good sativa are a soaring head high, almost like a rush, followed by an energetic feeling that stimulates brain activity and heightening senses. Sativas can be great for depression. Some examples of popular sativa medical marijuana strains are Green Crack, Blue Dream and Super Lemon haze (and pretty any other Haze).

Now of course one plant may exhibit qualities that are germane to both sativa and indica. This plant is typically known as a ‘hybrid’ and very often hybrid strains can be bred to cultivate the best qualities of the sativa and the best qualities of the indica in one super plant. OG Kush is an example of an excellent hybrid strain, so is Super Silver Haze. In fact, most plants are hybrids and very few growers will claim their plants are ’100% sativa’ or ’100% indica’ with any real authority. Although the Dr. Grinsppon strain (named after Harvard author and activist Dr. Lester Grinspoon) found at Barney’s in Amsterdam may just be an exception to this rule, as it exhibits extremely prototypical sativa traits, such as barley even flowering.

Okay hope this helped!

Voters deserve facts, not fiction

CO– In his Coloradoan July 2 Soapbox, Ray Martinez made many disparaging claims about medical marijuana centers in order to bolster his attempt to ban MMCs from Fort Collins. Too bad that none of his assertions are supported by facts.

Acting police Chief Jerry Schiager reported no medical marijuana business “surge in crime,” and no increase in 911 calls (1). The ordinance regulating MMCs, passed by Fort Collins’ City Council, is stricter than the state requires (2) In fact, state regulators track every gram of medicine produced by MMCs “from seed to sale” preventing any diversion to “the new black market” (3) as Martinez claims.

Proponents of the ban would also like us to believe, based on anecdotal “evidence,” that marijuana use is up among teens and MMCs are the cause.

Wrong again.

Two studies released this week show the opposite. The National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse reports that from 1999 to 2010, teen marijuana use dropped 22 percent (4). And a separate nationwide study shows that there is no causal relationship between medical marijuana and an increase in teen marijuana use (5).

MMCs are clearly not the boogey man that Martinez and company would have us believe.

Instead of fear-mongering and fantasy, we need a discussion based on reality.

The people of this state voted to make medical marijuana legal in 2000. Lacking any regulatory framework, Colorado’s state Legislature passed HB1284 in 2010. As a result, Colorado’s licensed MMCs are the most heavily regulated and taxed among all 16 states that allow for medical marijuana use.

Criminals are out. Standards are in place. Taxes are collected. And law enforcement keeps a 24/7 watch to ensure compliance. While this is tedious and expensive for center owners, we know that our customers and community members feel more secure because of the tight restrictions and security.

Reality check:

More than 8,500 people hold valid licenses to purchase medical marijuana in Larimer County. That averages out to more than 16,000 transactions a month, or 200,000 every year.

Let’s imagine for a moment that Martinez gets his way and MMCs disappear. What then?

Patients will lose out. Treatment protocols will be interrupted when the products, services and specialists patients rely upon and trust disappear. This will result in negative health outcomes for patients.

Our economy will suffer. One half-million dollars in sales taxes will go uncollected every year. More than 200 people will lose their jobs. Dozens of commercial leases will be abandoned. Millions of dollars in business investments will be lost. Bankruptcies will soar.

Our neighborhoods will become less safe. Currently, medical marijuana businesses are licensed, regulated, secured, and taxed. If we ban these businesses, medical marijuana sales will be pushed into our neighborhoods where they will be unlicensed, unregulated, unsecured, and untaxed, and increase the risk of illegal sales, fires, and home invasions.

Assuming home growers follow the rules and serve only five patients each, 1,500 homes are needed to serve Larimer County’s 8,500 registered patients. That’s 200,000 sales taking place in 1,500 private homes! Home invasions, electrical fires and chemicals dumped unmonitored into our sewers will become common.

This will be a disaster.

medical marijuana centers are the safest way to ensure that legal patients have access while protecting our community.

Please act to keep MMCs legal in Fort Collins.
